Why is the forum dragging? With a quickly growing forums, this place should be bustling! Let's get Splatoon and Squidboards hyped!Find Epic Splatoon game play and post it in the thread! Or, you can post some amazing fan-art! In the end, come here to talk about anything! Think of this as the Social thread from SamshBoards, but more hype-focused. Let's get people to join this site and establish an amazing community! Well, remember that the game isn't even out yet. And we really don't have a huge wealth of information available to the public yet, either. The point of starting Squidboards so early before release (almost a year before, and thus in BETA) is for the small numbers that want to come on every now and again to discuss what little information we have, as well as fostering the building blocks of a community from individual to individual. We've already gotten a tight little core group of posters here, which is nice to see. It's a bit unreasonable to expect the forum to be constantly active to a high degree at this point in the game's development. It's not a new IP either, so this is really a new experience for pretty much everybody here. There's very little to draw from right now. A lot of members seem to sign up on a whim or to have an account for later. That's okay. I enjoy the small amount of active members we have, which will only grow as we get closer to release and then when the game is actually out. Still, instead of threads like these, let's make the threads that are already active even more so by posting in them. If it's a new topic of interest, then of course a new thread suffices, but this thread isn't touching on anything new here. For that reason, this kind of thread would usually be locked. But since we have, again, a small number of active members and, so far, no issues in the community in terms of posting, spam, threads like these, moderation, etc., I'll leave it open. I do suggest, however, that if you want to make Squidboards a better place you should be contributing something other than a thread like this. Again, the question was not literally meant to be answered, but was just a way to open a general discussion topic. I see where you are coming from.

So to get Splatoon some hype, let's talk some strategies.
Of the information we have now, what is the strategy for you guys when working together via skype? Personally, the strat. a friend and I have come up with for the demo stage is simple: we have someone with a paint roller, a rifle, the demo weapon, and then one other person. The rifleman and normal guy rush out, covering as much ground as possible with ink. The roller covers the entire spawn point with ink. The last player can then either sneak around or back up the rushers or the paint rollerman.
How about you guys. Again, just basing off of available info, mostly just the demo stage as we know and the weapons that we know.

That sounds relatively solid as a starting strategy, but it's going to come down to improvisation with each team adapting to the constantly changing ground's ink color as the match progresses. You'd want to avoid both overextending and overlapping coverage. For example you don't need two inklings to cover/recover a narrow pathway. You'd need to be able to communicate so each member covered different areas instead of all converging on one. Take the command approach where one member directs the others to where they're needed most. A tactic of that nature requires playing to each member's strengths and the information to make smart choices as the situation calls for it.
While it is technically more efficient for all four members of a team to separate in order to cover as much ground as possible, a tactic of that nature taken to a consistent extreme carries with it the increased the risk of being splattered since there wouldn't be anyone to support you when faced with two or more enemy inklings. Knowing where your teammates are and precisely what they're doing will put in you in a better position to assist if need be. Plus there are areas on a map that require at least two inklings to efficiency cover/recover without there being any wasted ink. Knowing when to group up and split off will be important.
Voice Chat and the oh so useful Super Jump will be key to this given it's value extends beyond simply getting back into the action after getting splattered. Say you have two inklings Rifle and Ink Roller. The former being closer has made it to an area with loads of enemy ink on the ground while the latter is near two or more enemy inklings. They're each better suited for the others position. Luckily they can just Super Jump to each other and essentially swap positions on the map almost instantly instead of trying to deal with situations their loadouts aren't well suited for.
A Scout could be important too. Perks that improve movement speed as a squid, decrease re-spawn time (since you'll be putting yourself in harms way quite often), and of course that one perk that appears to extend your map's radar radius in order to spot enemy inklings from further away. In order for someone to direct their teammates they'll need to have access to as much of the big picture as possible. Glancing down at your Gamepad will only tell you so much. The demon's in the details so by regularly communicating with your three teammates you'll be able to help build the foundation for an efficient ever changing strategy.

Mmm that is very true. And with some sort of voice communication (whether skype, raidcall, or ingame) will be extremely helpful doing what you are implying. I do have a question that I thought about: am I rig ht in saying that the Super Jump can only be used from the spawn point? I believe I did not see any form of super jump from anywhere else beyond the spawn point(but then again my memory is a little fuzzy from the E3 footage)

It can be used anywhere as long as you're actually alive as far as I know.
You can Super Jump to four different locations those being any one of your three teammates and your home base spawn pad. This means it can be used anywhere or the latter option wouldn't even be possible. If you had to swim all the way back to base just to Super Jump to an ally inkling, you'd almost always be better of just squid swimming straight to them most of the time which would defeat the purpose of the Super Jump mechanic as a method of fast travel. It would rarely be a useful or even remotely efficient movement option.

However, if the Super Jump was for some reason limited to just the spawn zone, I would assume it would be purely used to get back into the game after you are respawned. I am glad that it is not this way, though.

Yeah I find the Super Jump to be one of if not the most useful mechanics for positioning. Say you have a member built for movement speed and general map penetration. They're able to spread ink onto key walls and objects quickly combined with increased swimming speed which not only assists the team by allowing for more focused smoother movement through the creation of ink pathways for those dedicated to spreading ink over anything else can utilize, they also act as moving warp points for key defensive positions. The high ground for example.
The Speed Inkling is able to quickly reach those points and once they have all the slower ones have to do is Super Jump to them. Remember you move slowest (baring wadding through enemy ink) when you're using your main weapon so you can't spread ink and maneuver quickly at the same time. The speed inkling could for example quickly penetrate up to a key sniping position while the Rifle user can again negate the time it would take to swim there normally with a Super Jump. They essentially build the paths the spreaders need to play their part without issue.
The point of the game is about territory control. It's not so much about taking control of an area with your ink, but actually keeping your teams hold over it once you have it. It doesn't matter if your team has the majority with a minute left if they can't keep it. It matters who has control at the end. In a way it will be only be through direct communication, coordination through specific roles, and the Super Jump that teamwork in Splatoon will shine. Whether it be through pure ink spreading, speed scouting/penetration, or just general support via protection/outright splatters everyone will have a role to play.
The more I think about it, the more I can't see this game succeeding in any serious competitive manner without voice chat. Please Nintendo don't force players to jump through extra hoops just to have what a team based game like this should come with by default. Friends only. Optional. That's fine just make it happen. Show us you care for the game as both a competitive and casual experience. The two don't need to be at odds with each other. A well managed team with voice chat whether the game comes with it or not while utterly crush one without it. There's no doubt in my mind about that.

Right that makes total sense since the game can totally change within the last ten seconds of a match if an area is broken through. Honestly, about the voice chat. I would only want voice chat if it was actually decent quality. The Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 audio voice chat isn't really that good. But if they have good quality voice chat then it is fine. But more then likely I will personally use an outside device.

Though I have heard good things about the Wii U Chat feature that the console itself has. Honestly, voice chat or not, I think an external method will be the most optimal. Right now, we're working with information that voice chat isn't in the game at all. But even if it turns out to be just for friends, an external method will likely be the best option. Will allow for a lot of communication beyond just for private matches, too...if there's private matches at all, of course.

If there is not an option for private matches and rooms, this game will not succeed competitively.

Exactly. We have not even been told if there will be private matches. If there is not an option for private matches and rooms, this game will not succeed competitively. Private matches/room will definitely be a thing in this game. In fact, its an inevitable feature that will be implemented imo. For Nintendo to just have the option of only online and local matches is absurd.

I assume it will be, but we just do not know at this time. But I am with you.

It seems simple to us, but it may not be to the developers. There are groups in smash and mk8 which are Nintendo's two biggest online games, and seeing how splatoon seems to be online focused it would be incredibly odd if they didn't implement them. Still, I won't convince myself of anything without proof. I don't want to be disappointed. :x
