It's probably caviar; I'd actually say 'don't overthink that point'.

What about that old dude in the trailer? Any ideas about him?

Wow, if that's what it's intended to be than that's some nice detail. I'm now given more hope calamari will appear in the game.

Old Squid dude is probably either an intercom guy or just a goofy NPC.

Mooost likely. Part of me says he has something else for him, though. Maybe not anything particularly major, but SOMETHING.

I've never speculated before about the history of a non released game. It's actually funny. From what I understand thanks to a post on the official Splatoon twitter (google translated) the objective on each stage is to recover some kind of electric fish that gives energy to the whole place. linkOn the last trailer, there are a lot of images of what seems like octopus propaganda against squids, depicting them with angry eyes and sharp teeth. And we can't understand the language but we can see a comic about a tentacle being captured and talking with the inkling. If this actually happens in the game, we may see the war from both perspectives, with the octopus actually having dialogues and maybe revealing their motives. Considering that, the story could get even deeper than necessary xDD It was revealed that the octopus built that complex underground to attack the squids, but does that really imply that all octopus live underground? or that they were forced to live outcasted? if so, that might give their army a solid motive to attack, therefore, it must be something else behind all this. Because the enemy of the game can't possibly have an objective more noble than the hero's. And such a cute squidgirls can't be evil... right?

Was there anything in the new trailer that could have some connection to Splatoon's story?

So the new screen shots showing off some of the single player "level selection" area reveals a rather interesting thing. Octo-valley, is basically the single player hub world.
So basically, this game has a hub world WITHIN its hub world. That's awesome.

i am curious how long the story mode will be and how long each level is. I think it would be neat if there was a daily mission; something small that changes daily. I mean, wouldn't it make sense for the hero mode to never really end? Additionaly, what is the motivation for playing story mode? There's gotta be something. Last thing. I kinda wish they would have went a different direction with hero mode. What if it was a prequel to the game, and the General was recounting famous missions that happened in a war? And it would all eventually lead up to the Inklings being victorious and built an arena for turf battles. However, the final hero mode sequence would take place on the opening of the hub; the octopi make a counter attack! The final sequence would keep building up into an epic climax, just like how The Wonderful 101 did.
Now wouldn't that be cool? It would even allow the hero mode nicely connect with the rest of the game.

Why would repelling the Octipi lead to a new sport being made? And making a series of glorified flash backs would break a lot of player immersion, especially given the games customization enfaces, and not to mention reduce any sort of tension that might be gained from it since your just basically going through something that's already been solved. Sorry, but the distance multiplayer and single player have is fine.

Why do I feel like the story is going to be amazing? Like I just have this peculiar feeling that the singleplayer is going to get like... RPG story. I dunno, probably not. But it's just a feeling.
