Looks I gotta analyze the Splatoon trailer again to see if your theory is possible soon. I forgot though, were the posters in the game in the underground?

It's a strange feeling, paying $13 to use what amounts to a giant Beyblade in a Zelda game

Just checked the trailer. All we saw was that they were on a wall of some sort, no background really.

Maybe it was a help wanted sign to defeat the enemies underground, another theory. I'll check it out very soon.

I watched the trailer again, it seems like they are incomplete villainous copies of the Inklings who want to their species to dominate over them. Though that octopus shadow photo though, maybe there's some real meaning behind it.
Someone should translate the language the squids are saying on those posters, those might be the key to solving the story.

Nintendo wouldn't do such a thing. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Octopi was banished underground after attacking the Inkling race thinking they were superior. There's a lot of anti-inkling propaganda that even goes down to their anatomy. As if they are monsters and not civil beings. Yo see them also depict themselves as the first beings too, and implied panels of them speaking out against them.
I think it's possible not all Octopi was anti-inkling, maybe there was just a army of Octopi that was.

You have a good point. Maybe the ending for Splatoon will have some sort of misunderstanding in the story.
What if the Inklings themselves are hunting down the Octopi so that they able to use the powers of shooting paint and wear the squid costumes to help gain some things mobility and go through paint? Sorta like how real-life hunters hunt down certain animals with large fur, to sell warm furry jackets in stores, if you know where I'm getting at.

I think skinning squids is a little too in-depth for me.

You didn't get what I saying? (I was kinda rushing that post, so my fault) In short, maybe the Inklings are in a war with the Octopi because the Inklings extracted all of their abilities to turn into a squid.

Is anyone able to translate that language, or at least figure what those letters mean?

I wouldn't say that. Nintendo is the responsible for games like Majora's Mask and the Mother series as a whole. Putting crazy shenanigans in apparently innocent games is one of Nintendo's traits. With that being said, there isn't a lot supporting the theory yet, so...
Edit: By the way, I am betting that "giant" Octopus in one of the screens is a story-mode boss in the game.

I'm still confused as fuck about that cat in the bottom right panel. Where does a cat fit into a war between Squids and Octopi?

I think the cat will the be the shopkeeper selling new DLC outfits

Yeah the cat is the biggest "WTF" character in the game. I think he could be a shopkeeper, but it seems like he plays a role in the story. Also, I think that those orbs you collect in single-player may be salmon caviar. That would make a lot of sense, especially given the counter for them has a fish on it that resembles a salmon. But, who knows? In certain lighting they can appear red but are really orange. Just like in the game. But, who knows?
