The GamePad mic sucks anyway. It seems like, from that interview, that you gain coolness and money from Turf Wars but I don't know about Splat Zones. There is other Ranked Battles too so I'm excited! It seems like Single Player will be a decent length too! I like How Turf War is the main mode while they have other modes that are require more skill, thought there is still skill in Turf War. Splatoon is now beyond my expectations!

No voice chat is honestly just ridiculous at this point. Nintendo is beyond stubborn and needs a harsh slap from reality. Intuitive gameplay or not, it's a team based game. It's an arena shooter, there's no way, no matter how fast the matches are, or how everyone can help in their own way, you're telling me voice chat is not a good thing to have. It wouldn't be so bad, until you read from the Destructoid preview that you can't tell what your teammates are picking. Its probably an extreme example, but if the entire team ends up picking the same weapon and it's one that's not helpful on that map, you're gonna be at a disasvantage. Who knows what other situations could arise that voice chat would help with. I don't want to get all negative but Nintendo being so damm adamant about no voice chat in their games is annoying. Looking at the positives, literally everything else that has come out of this preview looks great. I'm still excited to play this game and all this other news has gotten me hyped! Hopefully there's a loud demand for voice chat and they can patch it in later. It's not a deal breaker for me though since I can always just use Skype. Glad to know there will be other game modes than just turf war and ranked sounds like a great option for competitive players. The fact it's getting patched in later is also cool so we can already see how Tue team plans to support Splatoon post launch. Hurry up, May! I hear ya man. It bothers me that they are such a creative company, always coming up with new ideas, yet they are so stubborn about some things like online voice chat.

No, Andre just misspoke. He was talking about the multiplayer gear you purchase in the three shops. There has never been any mention of gear you unlock for the single player campaign. We've known for months that the clothing and perks were multiplayer only. Hence the flub. Wrong! Was just watching a video by ProJared ( Link at 4:50) and you can buy different equipment and there is a different currency between multiplayer and single-player. They are completely separate, but both modes will help you get better at the other.

So the point is there are two separate currencies and neither one affects the other in any way, but we've only actually seen some of what you can purchase and earn via the online multiplayer. The effects he was mentioning? One of them was about Ink Saver. It's a perk they've shown in a developer update a number of weeks ago. Oh no don't tell me they're just copy pasting them between modes. That's it isn't it. Makes sense I suppose.

We really need a Splatoon direct pronto. I hope that Splat Zones and other Ranked modes will be added in by the end of June. They will be on the disk but not playable until enough players are at level 10.

"So I made a slight mistake. The gear you purchase is for multiplayer--not single-player. Single-player customization hasn't yet been discussed as far as I know. Sorry for the confusion!" - Andre from GameXplain.
That's all I was referring to. Both him, ProJared and others played the exact same build of the game. They even played together as evidenced by their multilayer video footage. So right now we have no actual details on how exactly the gear is going to work for single player.

Has anyone confirmed you can even get gear in single player? I had thought that the gear was multiplayer only.

I assumed there was no customization in single player since you wear the hero suit.
On the topic of the Ranked mode coming later; apparently according to Nintendolife's preview the reasoning is:
"Due to the ranking system and overall more competitive feel to Ranked Battle, it will not be available at launch, rather the developers will be keeping a close eye on the number of players and their levels before releasing this mode so as not to put players at a disadvantage due to inexperience. We have been assured that this will only be a few weeks if the numbers are all satisfactory."
Isn't that... A little bullsh*t? Why limit the number of modes, something that's important in a multiplayer focused game, just because you think it will be too competitive for them? What kind of logic is that?

They should have just gone the Halo 3 route and had separate play lists for competitive players.

I think you get a special suit called the Hero Suit in the mode. However we don't know if you can buy single-player only gear with the currency. Also I like how as soon as you boot up the game the first time it takes you to the customization screen. I wonder what will be there as you can't buy anything from the shops yet. Maybe some starter gear to choose from? Also your gender and ink color?

I think the logic here is that they are waiting until people know the ins and outs of the game before putting them in situations that might be above them. Splatoon is almost totally new in terms of mechanics (besides shooting and jumping, really) so they don't want us to be overwhelmed. Maybe it's not GOOD logic, but I understand what they're doing. What they also might be doing is stringing along the lifetime of the game, and by "might" I mean "most certainly". Once everybody gets familiar with the online and maybe starts to get a little burned out on Turf War, BOOM, here's something new and more advanced to try.

Without voice chat, local multiplayer, splitscreen, LAN, etc., my concerns have really risen regarding this game's long-term health. And without those features, its competitive scene is all but non-viable it seems.

And without those features, its competitive scene is all but non-viable it seems. I think you had too big of expectations regarding competitive play which I fail to see is non-viable either way. It isn't exactly what you want nor how you wanted, but that doesn't mean it can't be it at all. Not having voice chat does equate to not being able to be played competitive ly. Also, when was local multiplayer deconfirmed?
