The way clothing customization works kind of bothers me. Even if the bonuses from clothes end up being balanced, which from what little stuff we saw, does seem somewhat likely, then I won't be able to make my squid all cute exactly how I like. It seems like the clothes I might want for my squid could have bonuses I don't want, and that's kind of weird.. Hopefully they can be turned off, and inklings will be free to look mad cool with no ramifications.

I'd hate to have the situation that Smash has with equipment.

I'm still going to pick the clothes I like the most, even if they have really awful bonuses. Or maybe I'll have the "competition set" and the "cool looking set" and change between them depending on the match... I don't know. I just hope there aren't any options that are clearly the best ones because everybody might end up choosing always the same clothes thus killing the variety.

Bunch of screenshots here:nintendoeverything.com/splatoon-screenshots-3/Gameplay:It actually looks like you can choose your weapon, sub, and special and mix and match however you want. If you look at gears and stats, you'll see something interesting. ^At the bottom you can see the headgear, clothes, and shoes. Notice how there's a number of stars next to them, the highest seeming to be 3 stars. Below you can see one primary stat enhancement, and below that you can see what seems to be more slots for stat effects. The number of additional slots follows the number of stars whichever gear has. How do you fill up those slots? Better question is, will they actually add more stats on the gear? Or something else? I'm thinking that maybe, by using gear a number of times you can get them individually leveled up gradually the more you use them. It's possible they add more subtle stats boost to your character in addition to the main stat boost, or just makes the main stat boost better. Also curious of the last longer bar below that. Hmm..... What do you think? In any case, this Nintendo Direct just made it extremely Splatoon can be played competitively.

I get the feeling like the stat boosts won't matter a crapton- they'll be helpful, but it won't be a matter of 'if you're not optimized you lose'.

Me too, so far the stat boosts from what I can tell seem pretty subtle. Like swimming in ink faster, faster running speed, ink refills faster, or depletes slower, launch to teammates faster. Nothing seems to effect the weapons at all. Just you. That's by me. And I doubt any will have downsides. If that's the case, making your Inkling just look cool shouldn't effect your performance at all.

I also noticed something weird about the weapon stats, if you look on the shop part, all of them have a "range" stat, but the other two are different for almost every weapon. Maybe there are different types of each? like a variety of ink rollers with different speed and weight, or snipers with longer ranges but slower reloading compared to other snipers?

I haven't seen that at all. The only one I'v noticed was a Scope-less Sniper Rifle, and one with a Scope you can purchase.

Really hoping that stats can be toggled off. These things do matter because even subtle changes can change how someone approaches a situation. If it wasn't important they wouldn't have added it.

It would be cool if they pulled a terraria type thing where you can have vanity equipment that customizes looks but you can still wear stat equipment under the vanity. The only problem with this is you wouldn't be able to tell what boosts someone might have. I am curious though if each piece of equipment has set bonuses that can't be changed or if the same piece of equipment can different stat boosts. The thing that makes this a question for me is the question marks that each piece of equipment has. Is this customizeable? Or is it just something that you unlock.

True, but removing them would remove some competitive aspects. I'm going to dress how I like. Skill is still going to play the biggest role either way.

It can throw off balance.

I think you guys are overreacting a bit about it. I get your concern but lets wait and see first before we start sweating about it. Also remember, things can get patched if something is OP'd or anything.

Nintendo doesn't often do patches unless something is gamebreaking. They did so with the 3DS version of Smash, but I don't think they have made any patches for the Wii U nor plan to. So don't count on that. (Note: I'm not that concerned either, just pointing out a flaw in your logic.)

They did the same patch for the Wii U version of Smash actually.
