It's a little tough to say. Games like smash and Mario kart benefit from tournament mode since they are not as focused on a team aspect (you can have 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 in smash, though singles is generally the main tournament style.)
For a game like splatoon, the only way I could see a tournament mode working would be if players could form their own teams, rather than be matched randomly online.

It is possible, but it isn't as easy to set up like a Smash tournament, because that could be held with one Wii U, a Splatoon tournament would need 8 for 4v4, assuming that is the competitive mode.

tournaments held at a physical location might be hard, considering you have to use the gamepad and it only allows 1 to be used per console... and since splatoon is 4v4, that means 8 wii u's will be needed :x
that said, i'm pretty certain that if nintendo included an online tournament mode in mario kart 8 and are going to for smash 4, they certainly will for splatoon. they've been trying to push it as their most notable online game, bringing it to the first apex venue (which sadly had to be evacuated) and asking people for their thoughts on its depth at places like PAX...
i hope that when the wii u gets cracked, people will be able to set up dedicated servers for splatoon long after nintendo shuts down their own. splatoon is really one of a kind, and it would be a shame to see its scene die (assuming nintendo doesnt make a splatoon 2)
