After getting a little curious about what a competitive Splatoon would even be like, I ran into something that could be a little bit of a problem for people who are interested in a competitive scene. With most consoles, it seems you have the ability to set up a LAN between multiple consoles, allowing for relatively easy local multiplayer. As far as I understand, and I could at least be wrong about this part, this is probably the way that most competitive console games are played in these in-person tournament situations.
So.. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much positive that the Wii-U is incapable of setting up a LAN with others. Which means, to play locally with multiple consoles, they're all going to need internet access, to connect directly to Nintendo's servers. This... Opens up certain problems. Probably mostly that routers are pretty expensive. If this really is a problem we may have to face... how should this be handled? Is it even really possible to set up a lot of routers in one room? If not, and say, it's only really possible to set up one, this is going to limit how many games can be played at once, and it'll also probably have to be a pretty nice router to handle eight games running at once.
I'd like to do anything i can to avoid it being so expensive to just run local tournaments, or even just play with a decent amount of people locally. I want any form of competitive scene to be easily accessible to anyone who wants to join in on the fun.
Am I mistaken about something? I hope so. If that's the case, let me know! Let's discuss!

Well maybe for local play, the max will be 2v2. They already said they're working on local 1v1.

From what I know there are LAN adapters that should work.

A system update could throw in functionality, or, if Ninty gets creative they could make use of the NFC in the gamepad.

I know that the Wii LAN Adapter works with the Wii U. I assume you should be able to just connect multiple Wii Us with that.

Werent the splatoon booths set up LAN style at E3? Unclear. People said that all of them were playing the game together but they weren't sure whether it was through wi-fi or LAN.

Well, I believe you can connect the Wii U to a LAN, but it requires an ethernet port, which the system is lacking. Supposedly, the Wii ethernet adapter also works on the Wii U, so I think you would need one of those for every Wii U you wanted to use.
Not exactly the most elegant solution, but it's way better than trying to run it all through wifi. Actually, I'm pretty sure wifi for a tournament all in one place would be impossible.

Yes, you can use the Wii ethernet adapter for the Wii U and, presumably, for Splatoon.

Yeah, I've seen people use the wii adapter for other games. I assume though that they'll eventually make one specifically for the wiiu though.

Perhaps Splatoon is the first game on wii u to support more than one game Pad! That way everyone playing will have the easy access to the overhead map.
