with friends but they were restricted in lobbies only so even if Splatoon was to get voice chat with friends we would probably end up with that.
Looks like Skype will be popular with Splatoon if that's the case.
Oh and is turf mode the only online multiplayer mode in the game?

It's unfortunate just how much divide the latest batch of news has created. Thanks to a combination of just plain little information and a vague sometimes shoddy translation players interested in the game are now more uncertain than ever before. So many points instead of reassuring fans have left them confused as to what the game will actually ship with. This has resulted in fans practically fighting amongst themselves which is not at all what the community needs. Though it's not all that surprising when you get right down to it.
"Game won't use CPU fighters; only once 8 human players have been found will a match start" - resulted in some people who took it at face value concerned over mid match balancing issues when players inevitably dropped out due to various reasons. "Having multiple modes with random matching would limit the number of players per mode, so all the focus is on the 4 vs. 4 for that" - led some people to interpret it as there being no other multiplayer game modes/types at all. You're not the only one that fears that to be the case cm2.
Lastly we have the lovely "No communication with players you are matched with" point which almost immediately resulted in the "that must mean there's no voice chat in the game period thanks for nothing Nintendo" backlash when in reality it refers only to Worldwide random match-ups with the word on voice chat's ultimate fate in the game still up in the air. While it certainly gave fans something to take about, it created rifts in the community as well.
To respond directly I'll just say I certainly hope that lobby only voice chat doesn't turn out to be Splatoons fate. It may as well not be in the game at that point as far as I'm concerned. I too fear for multiplayer game modes. As I'm sitting here typing this I'm still uncertain as to what exactly they meant by new game modes/types when it was mentioned they'd be adding some. Did it refer only to modes such as in Hero Mode and Duel Mode or was it types like CTF or King of the Hill? I certainly hope it wasn't just the former. More of that good old wait and see is in order I suppose.
I'll just be glad when we got solid, consistent, non-vague, factual information on the state of the final build of the game so there's no more of this needless worrying and in-community bickering over what is or isn't going to be in the game. Anything to help calm these recently violently churning waters. A lot of us here and elsewhere in the Splatoon community do honestly want this game to be great, to have all the wonderful features a game like this needs in order to help foster an active competitive community. It is only with that dedicated community that a competitive game can survive in the long term at all so I'm still holding out hope.

Even if Splatoon had voice chat for friend lobbies, external voice communication applications like Skype would still be #1 priority. Mario Kart 8 has voice chat but people still resort to Skype because it has better call quality and its much better overall.

Most of my friends don't own a Wii U, so I'd be playing by myself anyway. But if the one friend that does wants to play, we'll probably Skype.
