Smash has it's share of crews, guys and gals who got together, made themselves T-Shirts, a name, the works, then went off to tourneys making a name for themselves. Will Splatoon's community have something similar to Mike and the Punch Crew? If so, I expect lots of squid-pun names for the teams. What would you name yours?

If it gets big enough, I could see it happening.

The game has to be able to deliver a high quality competitive experience. How high/low is the skill floor and ceiling? We have at least a vague idea of the former, but the latter is up in the air. Will the game allow for a wide variety of weapon sets and perks to flourish or will it be condensed into a select few viable options within the meta-game? The factors of balance coupled with whether or not the experience can remain fresh for an extended period will in large part determine whether or not dedicated pre-made teams will even be a thing.
Given this is indeed a team based game coupled with the various weapon sets and perks I could easily see the game's cooperative elements coming heavily into play. The online needs to be solid for anything like it to succeed when you consider the high unlikeliness of any sort of local multiplayer. We're talking quality net-code, full voice chat, other options like the ability to form these crews complete with of course all the works within the online interface and challenge other crews. Basically if the online isn't fantastic this game will be in dire straits.

That's not happening, I don't think. If it does have a full suite of online features like what you listed off, I will be legitimately surprised. Frankly, I'm not asking for much from the game in terms of online experience. Good netcode, maybe a way to invite friends. Not much else. I'm a simple man.

It doesn't have to be complex. It could just be as follows:
With Anyone With Friends
When you choose the latter, a number of options are displayed depending on certain conditions. Here you can request to join a team that hasn't yet reached the four member limit or invite another player to join yours. Once a team of four has been formed you have the option of challenging other teams.
So now it comes down to whether or not we want to deal with the Premade vs Pug debate. Players are absolutely going to want team up with their friends. That's to be expected, but it's rather unfair to expect a pug of four random players thrown together to stand a chance against them. You could just limit it so premade teams were only able to challenge/be challenged by other premades to nip that issue in the bud.
Remember Mario Kart 8 allows you to create your own private rooms complete with customizable rules. You can then give out the code to said room to whomever you wanted to allow access. The same could easily be applied to Splatoon for Crew battle purposes.

Basically, that's all I'm expecting, really. Mario Kart 8 setup. Nothing more than that.

I agree that it will be similar to mario kart. Skype groups, clan tags and the like. If we can't choose who's on what team I can't see it working out though.

I'm 50/50 as to if I think choosing sides will be in the game. I could see it being there. I could see it not being there. On that front I'm clueless.

If you can invite your friends to play online and be on your team, I'm sure a lot of good players will play with each other and dominate. But since its Nintendo we are talking about, online will probably be filtered by skill, so a pro clan won't be playing a brand new player.

Seeing Splatoon will be a competitive game, teams/crews will be a thing.

I wish there was an actual clan system a la Halo 2, but apparently developers were just too OP in the 00s for modern developers.
A ranked matchmaking system where you could team up with three friends and go into mming together, that'd be perfect for teams. Surely custom games will fill this role, though. But that'll require more communication between teams to set these games up. Thankfully we have Squidboards and other outlets to do so. ^_^
As for crews, it'll likely be an unofficial thing like it is in Smash or other fighting games. Bunch of local friends or whatever who play together a lot. Like my crew is iQHQ, a big group of Long Island players, but that won't necessarily consist of any 4 man team I play for (then again, considering we got FatalStryke and J Ribbs from competitive Gears, it's a super safe bet that this will be the case, personally).

I vote on calling these either "crews" or "squads," depending upon how many people are allowed per group. Squad sound new and classy. There could be some good alliteration with it too. (i.e. The Super Splatter Scatter Disaster Squad )
