Splatoon is obviously a more multiplayer based game, so how will local multiplayer be in the game? Could we see 4 player local vs. Bots, 2-4 player local online or maybe even a co-op mode we don't know about! What do you all think?

I highly doubt the focus is going to be on any of the local modes. If you have four players on a single console, why not allow them to team up and face another group of four online? Perhaps a local two players could team up with another local set of two to face a similar setup online for total of four consoles all told. Given that local 4 on 4 split screen would be a rather unpleasant alternative experience. Best you could do without the discomfort of horrendous screen real estate is 2 on 2 local split screen which just wouldn't be the same. Neither is playing against the AI
It's a team game so co-op is already a given. That's the entire point. My biggest concern is how to balance the other controllers to match the gamepad. With it the map is always on showing your three teammate's locations at all times and all it takes is a single touch to super-jump to any of them or your home base. I could see the d-pad being utilized for the the super-jump on the pro controller, but you'd also need another button to toggle a semi translucent version of the map on the monitor as well. It also straight up lacks any motion control option for camera movement.
There's also the issues of frame rates. We've only ever seen the game played local LAN style on the demo build. I'd imagine scenarios like multiple player split screen would definitely lower it. I'm unsure if they're shooting for 60 or 30, but whatever it is I hope it's constant. The more inklings you have playing on the same console at once the worse it's going to be.

I'm gonna be the debbie-downer.
I do not believe that Splatoon will have anything other than a 1v1 mode in regards to local multiplayer. I wouldn't mind if they did have something else, like 2 players per console, but 4 player local matches in any respect are right out, I believe. If I turn out to be wrong, I'll eat my words and smile while doing it, but I sincerely don't think it's happening.

Ok I can totally understand 4 player local not working, although I hope they can pull it out. I'd be fine with two player though, having the 1 vs. 1 and perhaps 2 player online on 1 console.

That's all I think has a possibility of happening, and I'm STILL not confident about the 2 player on one console.

Here's hoping there will be an option for Co-op for the story mode. I can't see how local battles could be playable with the issue of how the map would be implemented.

Seeing as both Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4 (2 of Nintendo's premiere multiplayer experiences) had 2 player online, I definitely think that we will see that in the case of Splatoon. Other than that, I have no idea.
