If there aren't private/friend rooms in this game, the competitive community will fall. I don't think nintendo will make that mistake. There are no computers in this game. If you have seven friends (Or seven people that are friends of friends of you maybe, depending if it works like MK8's system where you can see who is online) then of course you can make a private match. But if you have less than that then the gaps are filled with strangers. This may be another reason there is no voice chat with friends, as if there was then you could still chat with strangers, and there is no point in making it for seven friends when that will not happen that often. This is all speculation, as all Nintendo has said to my knowledge is that you can play with friends in some way or form online. i would imagine you could just join your friends server, and that's really the extent of what you can do with people on your friends list although i'm still hoping for private lobbies...

That's kind of what I was thinking when I mentioned how MK8 does it. Maybe you can see if there is an open space in the lobby your friend is in and then you can join. I'm now pretty sure that is the case, but hopefully they also allow you to have private lobbies for eight people.

I doubt it. Don't assume anything when it comes to Nintendo. They're not thinking competitive in the same way most other folks do, so don't expect them to make decisions like they are. It'll save you a lot of headache and heartache down the road.

But on the other hand that really sucks for anyone who doesn't have internet or something. But then why would you buy Splatoon, an online 4v4 shooter, if you don't have internet? Even if someone is buying it for the single player the single player gear is a separate thing and does not require internet! Whoa, I derped so hard on this . None of that occurred to me as I posted. You're right!
