What do you think will end up being the ideal setup for tournaments?

What do you think will end up being the ideal setup for tournaments? do you mean actual setups? like, consoles and tvs and shit? not sure... going to be a mess without LAN i'd imagine teams would want to be as adaptive and well rounded as possible, the short time to kill will make the game really dangerous. we'd definitely see at least 1 paint roller per team (unless that weapon turns out to suck) because of its wide area coverage, but we'll probably see a lot of variants of the splattershot

Doing in person tournaments will be really difficult based on what we know right now. It might be more similar to a PC LAN tournament than a console one, since every player would need a system and network connection. BYOW Bring Your Own Wii U haha

BYOW Bring Your Own Wii U haha yeah, without LAN tourneys are gonna be a nightmare, but with it they'll be manageable i feel. youll still need 8 wii us and tvs, but you wont have to worry much about wireless interference messing up the match (besides the gamepad) or ping. so if we get LAN support, when tournaments are up and running, theyll stay up and running online tournaments are going to be the way to go, and if we get LAN working, big tournaments will be in-person

It is possible to use a LAN adapter with ethernet cable to connect to the Internet, regardless of ability to play over LAN.

good im just hoping the game releases with LAN support. i know that its in the game, considering they use LAN for presentations at conventions like E3 2014, but we don't currently know if the game will let us use it... if not, we'll have to wait for the wii u to be cracked and hopefully someone finds out how to boot the game with LAN enabled

There is a potential massive drawback to local play opposed to online play. If it is possible to have local 8-player battles, whether by default or cracking, it may be that a user does not have access to their online profile rewards during the local match. If the multiplayer level is solely connected to the online profile and not the user's console, then this might be the case that all of the items, perks, and upgrades attached to a user's character/profile online will not be usable in local matches. Every local game would have everyone at basically level 0 or 1, what ever the starting point is, with basic items and weapons.
This would make LAN games much less desirable than online, where all the upgrades and higher level items and perks are a huge draw. It would be optimum and excellent if users have access to their online level items for local games, but even if all this is possible, I can see it being restricted to discourage local play in favor of online. That way, local games would be used primarily for events and MLG, while everyone else would play online most of the time, as it would be preferable to play with the earned gear instead of base level gear.

I haven't been to one since 2006, so I'd either try to find them for Splatoon or help organize.

I think most tournaments would be like build a team of friends and such against another team of friends and such and make team names, and if clans do become established they could probably enter too.

Coming from competitive Mario Kart, the online scene works pretty well. I don't see Splatoon really being a local game where you play against people in the same room honestly.
