Competitive Splatoon can be played online with no need to go to a tournament considering it's a different type of game than Smash. Teams are going to need to setup Skype chats, etc and the logistics will have to be worked out but it won't be dependent on people bringing Wii Us and TVs to an event. I'd hope there's LAN options to make it easier for people who want to have a Splatoon Tournament as part of something like APEX, but it's not going to kill the scene for the game if that ends up being impractical. My interpretation of eSports is that in addition to online multiplayer, there are matches and tournaments that teams who play games such as COD attend. I've read their requirement lists for being on the teams and traveling to certain matches in various areas of the country (USA) depending on the team. As for the Skype bit, I understand people like to use Skype due to ease, but is it even possible to have dedicated Skype servers for clans and teams? "In my day" we used TeamSpeak or Ventrilo. Now there are other options like RaidCall and Mumble. I know I've even seen COD teams mention that they use Skype, but has that taken over so much that the traditional dedicated voice chat programs aren't used as much anymore? Or is it because I'm more of a PC gamer that I find this puzzling? To me it's just natural to first consider using a voice chat program.

It's not as easy as just bring your system though if we need 8 Wii U'S for ONE game of Splatoon. Bringing your systems is not always the most reliable way to have tournament either. Yes, it's what pretty much everyone does but you need TV's too, the game, the gamepad. Not everyone is going to be willing to help and you can't blame them. Losing the Gamepad is a $115 replacement. That's just the dang controller. Apex (huge smash tourney) would not have been able to get enough set ups by having people bring theirs if Ninte do didn't donate systems and GameCube adapters. There has to be lan set up in this game, I can't believe in 2015 Nintendo wouldn't make it a basic function of the Wii U, but if there isn't that really is going to be an issue.
A local tournament is the soul of eSports too. Yeah, games can thrive as online only tournaments but even primarily digital games like Dota 2 have a giant in person tournament. Smash wouldn't be where it is today without the grass roots community that was formed through local weeklies either.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to pitch in a thought of mine if that's alright. The first time I saw the 1v1 gameplay and they said that player 1 plays on the gamepad, my immediate thought was, can single player be played in off-screen mode? I was wondering if they have confirmed or denied the possiblity of off-screen support and if we know what the gamepad screen is used for in single player.

I think off TV play as an option would be optimum for single player unless EAD come up with some really special use of the gamepad for it. Keep in mind that hero mode is unlikely to be the sole single player mode. As we saw in the recent overview trailer, there appears to be a target practice mode. There could possibly be additional single player modes that may end up having some novel use of the gamepad.

It actually looks like a fun mode to me with the balloons spawning at different points drawing both players into the action. I do wish they had a splitscreen LAN mode that was 2 v 2 or free for all, but we'll probably have to wait for Splatoon 2. Also the direct pretty much confirmed that there's more online multiplayer modes than Turf War & Splat Zones How about Spla2oon? Or SplaTWOn!

I personally am looking forward to the local 1v1 mode. I have friends over all the time, who greatly enjoy shit-talking. So a mode focused around 1v1 battles where the next marker would be will be great, since the victor of each mini-battle will most assuredly get all the balloons for that spot, and time to talk trash while the other respawns. Not the greatest mode, but it's not as horrific as people are making it out to be.

I hope that another multiplayer mode will be included, however if this is the only mode I'll be happy(for playing with friends locally)

After re-watching the Treehouse footage I actually think it looks fun. Nowhere as good as 4v4 battles, but I think it is the best thing they could of done with 1v1. I still hope there is 2 on one wii u versus 2 on another in this game, though I doubt there will be. I won't mind too much if there isn't any other local multiplayer mode.

Smash wouldn't be where it is today without the grass roots community that was formed through local weeklies either. exactly my point... there's a lot of complications that "just bring your own console" can'tsolve. if absolutely ANYTHING goes wrong, then a lot of complications start to arise. that's why a LAN mode is important. i know the game hasn't released, but what if competitive splatoon was good? REALLY good? quake good, melee good? cs 1.6 good? like, what if it survives 10 years from now? what happens when nintendo shuts down servers for the wii u? the game, besides battle dojo, is just going to die, assuming the wii u doesn't get cracked and we can't make our own servers. what are we supposed to do? wait for splatoon 2, if nintendo even wants to make one? what if it's not as good? splatoon would just be gone obviously, i'm making the issue sound more serious than it is, but good local multiplayer is critical to a game's longevity... even traditionally online esports like counter strike and DOTA have LAN setups at the most notable tournaments. that's because even slight lag can be disastrous. that's why you're never going to see a serious street fighter tournament happen on xbox live or something. it varies from game to game of course, cs:go players have been playing with 64 tickrate since it's conception, and in a world where cs:go had no LAN options because of DRM or something, it'd still have an active community. i guess i'm making a mountain over a molehill, but it's a shame that splatoon doesn't have any kind of LAN. it does have a negative impact on the game's longevity, so we're just going to have to enjoy splatoon for however long it's going to last

it's a shame that splatoon doesn't have any kind of LAN. If you really think this is the case, just because it hasn't been formally announced, I'd recommend re-watching the videos of people playing the game at E3. In one of the videos, the representative(s) clarify that the people playing Splatoon on the Wii U consoles at the E3 demo are playing in LAN mode. I for one am cautiously optimistic that we will be able to use this mode as well sometime after the game is released commercially.

I would think that if it's not accessible by users immediately at launch (and why it hasn't been promoted), is because it is probably not deemed crucial or entirely effective to do so since Nintendo's core marketing for their games doesn't typically focus on any competitive aspects as they don't push their products toward a competitive audience. I feel like Splatoon could start turning the tide on that. I expect there will be more developments in the future regarding this.

The problem with local multiplayer on Splatoon is that the gamepad is needed to launch to a teammate, and i think is also required for some of the special weapons in this game. If the game was to go competitive and be played at large gaming events, the players would most likely have to use online, unless some type of LAN party can be made which i'm not even sure is possible on the wii U This is what we have been talking about. The answer to if it is possible is yes. The answer to if it will be available for use is that we do not know yet.

Honestly, I'll take a crack at it. The Battle Dojo seems cool enough to train in, as they made it for.
