We've all heard it by now. Nintendo is working with a Japanese mobile company called DeNA (Pronounced DNA) to create mobile games in addition to their console and handheld games. To make sure that people don't think that they are leaving the console business Nintendo announced that they are working on a new system that at the moment is called Codename NX. We are supposed to get more info about it in 2016. Nintendo and DeNA have both bought stock in each other for this deal. Nintendo has stated that they are not doing ports from the Wii U and 3DS to smart devices as they are making games designed for them. They are also working together to make a new membership program to replace Club Nintendo. I know this is a bit late but I want to hear all of your thoughts on this! I personally don't think this will be that bad as they are still making console and handheld games. They are trying to use mobile games with their IPs as a way to advertise their systems! Nintendo has already had a huge stock increase since the announcement so hopefully this will be successful for them! What do you all think about this? What games would you want them to make for smart devices?

I dont think this means they will put all Mario games on phones like some fear, it most likely just means that you'll be able to play stuff like pokemon swap on your phone. So thats a good idea, probably.

There's going to be a heavy emphasis on console and handheld design, so I'm not too fearful of mobile design taking over any time soon.

I was a bit apprehensive about this at first, because I like the fact that Nintendo has an iron grip on their IPs and doesn't water them down by putting them out on every system ever.
But reading the press statement, it seems like they aren't just going to dump Super Mario Bros. on to phones or whatever, but actually make new games designed with mobile in mind. If they stick with that plan, I don't really see a problem with diluting the IPs.
I mean, remember when Square put the classic FFs on phones and ruined them by redrawing all the art and giving them horrible touch controls? Remember when Sega did that with Sonic 1? It sounds like Nintendo isn't going to do that. If you want to play a classic Mario game, you gotta have a Nintendo system.
I'm probably more worried about microtransactions. They've dipped their toe into it already with some success (Rusty's Baseball is fairly popular). I think MTs are the worst thing to happen to video games since "always online"

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball does microtransations in a good way though with having to talk to Rusty to make him lower the price.

I'm glad you could enlighten me, since I've never played it and only know about how it works from secondary information. Steel Diver did MTs, too, didn't it? I really doubt Nintendo would do MTs really badly or like in a sneaky way. Probably a worse issue with free-to-play games is the ads that are everywhere. I'm really curious to see what gameplay they come up with that best utilizes the limited control options of a cell phone.

Steel Diver gave you a pretty huge demo but you can get the full game for a low price (can't remember what). I only play each one for literally 5 minutes before deleting them so I didn't purchase anything.

I didn't download it because I don't really have any interest in that game. Didn't Bravely Default have things you could buy with real money? Some kind of power up things? I'm sure things like Pokemon Shuffle will make it on to phones. Something to distract you from the should-crushing tedium of waiting for the bus or whatever. Something moderately fun with Pokemon slapped on it would sell like gangbusters on the App Store.

Yeah, they both appeared on my 3DS. Probably Pokemon Shuffle has too if I turned my 3DS on.

Few bad things could happen:
1. Takes resources away from handheld and console development. 2. Sequels to franchises that would otherwise be on handheld or console will show up on mobile and not be on handheld/console. (My favourite example is if they make an F-Zero on mobile and then consider that satisfying the F-Zero fanbase for another decade.)

I don't like this mostly because I don't have a mobile phone of any kind. If Nintendo puts good(or high) quality games on the phone, then that forces me to get a phone which I hope is not the case. I'm hoping that the NX can handle 3DS, Wii U, and mobile phones. We also don't know if the NX is a handheld or a console or some sort of weird hybrid. I don't think it'll be a console mostly because developers are still making games for the Wii U. More than likely, it'll be a handheld of some sort.

Unless you're such a huge Nintendo fan that you MUST have all the good games they make I'm quite surprised the companies bought stock in each other. That shows a serious commitment.

There is nothing wrong with Nintendo developing mobile games. There are many franchises that would fit perfectly on smartphones (Eg. WarioWare, Brain Age, Rhythm Heaven, etc.). The recently released Pokemon Shuffle is also a perfect example of a game that would be excellent for mobile. While many worry that this could cause people to stray away from the consoles since their favorite franchises are on their phones, I believe it's the perfect marketing tool and can actually get people to buy the consoles/handhelds.
