I know for me it is. I guess you can say to some extent Kid Icarus Uprising is a shooter but it has quite a bit of on-rail shooting sections as well as close-up combat with your blades or claws or any weapon type really and the platforming you have to perform to move to your destination.

Not for me, I used to play Halo 3 a lot (still the best one, I think) and rocked TimeSplitters 2 and 3 for ages. This will be the first one I'm excited about in a long time, though, and since it focuses more on things I like such as crazy movement and territory control rather than firefights, I'll probably be waaaaay better at, and more dedicated to, it than I was Halo.
Though I WAS pretty lethal with the Gravity Hammer...

Not for me. I've played a couple games like Conker: Live & Reloaded (has a multiplayer shooter portion), Halo (with my brother and some friends mostly), TimeSplitters2, Doom, Heretic, and Hexen.

My first shooter was actually Halo 2, and I've played many others, including Star Wars: Battlefront 1 and 2, Call of Duty WaW, Advanced Warfare, MW3, Medal of Honor, and even Team Fortress 2.

First console shooter I'll own, but I've played lots of shooters at my friend's house. He's really into shooters. So yeah, I should get the hang of it pretty quick.

Nah. Played Unreal Tournament a lot, Left for Dead series a lot, used to be big on Team Fortress 2. Enjoyed Killing Floor as well. Not too much else, but no, this ain't my first rodeo by a long shot.

Not my first overall, but my first on Wii U and the first where I'll (hopefully) be getting heavily into online multiplayer.

I would say kind of, I have played Metroid Prime, Kid Icarus Uprising and all the Metal Gear Solid if you can even count those, so... this will be the thing closest to a normal shooter I've ever played.
Ok, the second closest thing after the Metroid Prime Hunters demo.

Well, one of the first video games I ever played was a shooter, Duke Nukem 3D. And I played some more like Metroid Prime, Operation: Flashpoint and Borderlands. But it's not a genre that usually gets my attention, I'm not interested in any shooter that doesn't have some special features or mechanic that makes it unique. Splatoon it's probably one of the most refreshing games in this aspect in the past few years.

I guess I really think of it as Nintendo's special "first person adventure" genre.

I guess I played a tiny bit of TF2, but not really.
I've played KIU and I'm playing through Metroid Prime Trilogy, but I'm certainly not the biggest shooter fan around.

I've played many shooters before, the halo series, call of duty, Star Wars battlefront, rainbow six and so on. So I should feel right at home when I start playing Splatoon. But splatoon is still dramatically different that all of the other shooters.

I'm no stranger to shooters at all. Some of my favorites include Gears of War 3, Bulletstorm, Team Fortress 2 and Vanquish. And even though I've only played shooters that would be considered "manly" and "hardcore", I'm still looking forward to trying out Splatoon.
