According to this article ( Link), you need to be connected to the internet whenever you customize your character or buy anything from the shops. This is because Nintendo will continue to add new gear to the shops post launch! We knew that the gear in the shops changes daily, but we didn't know that they will be constantly creating new content to be added to the shops! This even more explains the low file size of Splatoon, as whenever you purchase gear you are downloading it. However I really doubt the gear takes up that much space. From the article it sounds like we may get more weapon variants over time as well!

On the one hand that's awesome and I'm glad to know the clothing will only keep growing! Hopefully we even get some other Nintendo games themed gear.
But on the other hand that really sucks for anyone who doesn't have internet or something.

That isn't the vibe I got from the article but it makes sense. If someone is using gear that you don't have downloaded then how would that work? It must be on the disk! Will they just have constant updates including all the latest gear? Maybe the reason that you have to be connected to the internet when buying gear is so that the shops are selling the same stuff as everyone else. And maybe you have to be connected to customize your character so that your inkling appears correctly when it is in someone else's plaza.

But on the other hand that really sucks for anyone who doesn't have internet or something. But then why would you buy Splatoon, an online 4v4 shooter, if you don't have internet? Even if someone is buying it for the single player the single player gear is a separate thing and does not require internet!

I wonder what they meant by "Doesn't offer custom match types with friends like Smash Bros." Maybe that means when playing with friends you just have to play online like everybody else?

I assume that is what they meant, as there are no computers in this game and who would have seven friends wanting to play Splatoon at the same time? You probably can set up a match and then strangers will fill in the gaps. Maybe you could also choose whether you are on the same team as your friends or not. Which reminds me; do we know whether your teammates switch between matches, besides new people joining and leaving the lobby? Like could your opponents one round be your teammates in the next round? Does anyone remember how it works in MK8's terrible battle mode or team races? Also where does it say that inyo?

In the old days they usually put players playing on the same console on the same team, but since there's only one person per console maybe they wouldn't do that? Of course, you could always collude over Skype or something so maybe they'll always put you on the same team. It's hard to say without more information. It says it in the IGN preview article that is linked in the article that YOU linked. Follow the links! : P

I think it is just to clarify that in Splatoon there is no changing rules such as what items are allowed, how much time matches last, and so on and so forth, like in Smash Bros. how almost everything about a match is customizable. Splatoon is an entirely different game, so it basically doesn't have the same match rule changing abilities.

To FunkyLobster: I would actually like map packs that are paid DLC. MK8 has paid DLC for tracks and that worked out perfectly! Don't get me wrong, I would prefer the packs to be free but I doubt they would do that. Anyways from the Wii U daily article it sounds like they will keep adding clothing through the shops and not paid DLC (With real money), but maybe they will also have exclusive outfits for paid DLC such as the school girl outfit. I'd prefer if they didn't go down that route but if they did I think it would be great if they made it part of a pack with maps like MK8 did! To Rag and inyo: Yep Rag is right. I was just about to post that after reading the ign article but he beat me to it! However I still think that when you play with friends what I said is correct.

But you can watch videos of the maps. MK8's DLC tracks are amazing and for a low price the packs are really worth it. I really hope they do a bundle like that for Splatoon DLC if they do any (Which they have already hinted at). Also I personally hope clothes won't be stand alone DLC, as they doesn't really affect gameplay. However, as the news above implies, it doesn't look like they will go down that route. I understand where you are coming from, but personally I just want more maps.

If there aren't private/friend rooms in this game, the competitive community will fall. I don't think nintendo will make that mistake.

If there aren't private/friend rooms in this game, the competitive community will fall. I don't think nintendo will make that mistake. There are no computers in this game. If you have seven friends (Or seven people that are friends of friends of you maybe, depending if it works like MK8's system where you can see who is online) then of course you can make a private match. But if you have less than that then the gaps are filled with strangers. This may be another reason there is no voice chat with friends, as if there was then you could still chat with strangers, and there is no point in making it for seven friends when that will not happen that often. This is all speculation, as all Nintendo has said to my knowledge is that you can play with friends in some way or form online.
