I think the biggest mistake Nintendo/Mr. Iwata made was giving people something to call their future platform and giving them a little too much on which to speculate. I had to stop reading articles about it, because all of the ideas and predictions people are saying about "NX will be this" or "Nintendo is admitting that their current console is garbage" and "NX will come out next year" and "Zelda won't be on Wii U" and this and that and the other that people have been saying are just so asinine. I have very low tolerance for stupidity, and I'm not sorry for it.
Iwata-san could have just as easily said, "We are also working on a future dedicated platform. This is not an announcement. Period." and leave it at that. However, he had to add a little more, and even answer more questions in the following days giving more vague hints about it to stir up the pot and get people roaring all over the place with their outlandish ideas.

I guess that's the internet in a nutshell. Though I view his "announcement" as a reassurance to the public that they're only working on a console, obviously not abandoning the Wii U any time soon.

It got three years, though they didn't kill it when the DS came out in 2004. Six years seems to be the norm. That's what the Wii got, and that's pretty much what the PS3/360 got.

Nintendo cannot afford to realease the next console too early. If they do, they will always be a generation behind. If you go to the website Kraken World Media, you can actually find a three part editorial i had written about a month ago. One of my key arguments was that Nintendo needs to remove reverse compatibility just for the next generation. RC really limits a console. We would still have wii remote integration in the next console. Over 10 year old technology. Anyway, go check out the editorial if you want to read my opinions.

I just read all three parts; great write up! While I initially thought that Reverse-compatibility was a great thing for the Wii U (since the Xbox One or PS4 lack this feature), your thoughts on the matter had me thinking otherwise. Maybe having Reverse-compatible software is in fact keeping the system from reaching its maximum technical potential. Also, Nintendo NEEDS to change their policies regarding Youtube content. I'm a big fan of the Let's Play group Achievement Hunter. While they've played various Nintendo games in the past, they have openly stated that they will not release any Let's Plays of Nintendo content until Nintendo reverses their Let's Play policies. This is a huge deal, as Let's Plays are one of the biggest forms of advertising and promotion for video games today. There's been so many games that I've become aware of and knowledgeable of, simply because I watched a Let's Play of them. I'm really hopeful that Nintendo reestablishes their dominance in the Video Game industry, as I'd like nothing more than to see one of my favorite companies succeed.

If the next Nintendo console is reverse compatible with the Wii U, that means that it should theoretically be able to play gamecube games, which is just ridiculous. I think one way they could allow reverse compatibility without limiting the hardware of the next console is to put the entire wii u library on an eshop of the next console. Do not allow it to play physical disks, but allow people to download past games. And if possible, do not sell cheap gamepads, but allow the wii u game pad to sync into the next console for wii u games. But that is just my two cents.

The Wii U can't play Gamecube games, so why would a console with backwards compatibility with it be able to? I think that is a horrible idea as then everyone would have to re-buy their games, and I personally like hard copies of games. Also to JP4464 yeah they need to change their policy. I doubt they ever will though. The other day a Let's Player I like cancelled their next LP because they kept getting content ID and they need the add revenue. The money Nintendo pays you if you do their program isn't enough to live on, so that is useless as well.

Maybe because they aren't on big channels?

Maybe because they aren't on big channels? That could possibly be it. Another reason could be that the content creator is not monetizing those specific videos. It all really depends, though I'd really like the policy to be reversed, regardless.

It literally plays an entire wii system, which was reverse compatible with camecube games. The downloaded games would be for those who never got to play them on the original console. Why would you need it when you have a wii u already bought? It is just a suggestion to keep away from the limitations of reverse compatibility for the next generation. For the generation after the next, reverse compatibility can come back in welcomed arms, at least for that gen.

Lots of people don't want to keep their old consoles and want their games to be playable on the next console. And while the Wii U does play an entire Wii system I assume it doesn't have the code to play like a Gamecube.

And while the Wii U does play an entire Wii system I assume it doesn't have the code to play like a Gamecube. This is most likely the case. The original white Wii had a physically built-in Gamecube, but the Wii U has a virtual Wii which runs in another layer from the Wii U interface if I'm not mistaken. Therefore, the Wii U not only lacks code to function like an original Gamecube, but hardware as well. This is apparent when reading reviews on the third party GC controller adapters. Reviews have implied that they may work with other games in addition to Smash, but still a limited number of games, and it is not possible to play GCN games on a Wii U.
